Prize! Prize! Prize!

Woofer Ten (Shanghai Street Artspace)
1st exhibition kicks off on 24th OCT!

Curators: Luke Ching and Lee Chun Fung
Responding Artists: Susan Chan, Lo Chi Kit, Cally Yu

As the inaugurating show of the experimental art space Woofer Ten, “Prize Prize Prize” aims at strengthening the sense of community around the Shanghai Street neighbourhood where it is located, with a  program open for everyone to partake in fun.

To begin with, a team of over 30 youngsters, alongside with artists and curators, first made extensive field trips in the district, chatting with the people and different stores nearby, to collect first hand observations and anecdotes, revealing amusing facts and hidden stories.

For the Part [A Million and One Prizes]
People are invited to nominate some interesting aspect of different stalls and stores nearby, and trophies are designed accordingly and presented to them for display.

For the Part [Glory Glory Shanghai Street]
Residents, on the other hand, are encouraged to recount their personal glorious histories or display their favorite occupations and or private collections.

Public monumental sculpture in Hong Kong, used to be of a top down commission model, with people having no say in deciding its content, nor any form of participation. Such art project not only wasted a great opportunity in public arts education, but also a taste of democratic participation at the community level.

With the use of trophies, the most common form of monumental sculpture, “Prize Prize Prize” turns the traditional monumental public sculpture model on its head, and construct a community art project builds upon a bottom up, democratic participation and authentic community memories. Trophy design, by itself, is already an art form that concretizes positive value figuratively. Tailor-made trophy too, at once targets an individual, but could also reach a semi public communicative space within the community.

Every community is a network of different stakeholders build upon time. Each community, however commonplace, accumulates its everyday life layers upon layers and formed its own unique landscape. If you take an appreciative angle, surely you could continuously to find new amazing discoveries strolling down a community like the Shanghai Street.

For the Part [Star of the Month]
As an extension of “Prize Prize Prize”, Woofer Ten will pose a certain theme based on the hottest topic in town and accept public nominations of the store that most fit the topic.

Woofer Ten
Woofer Ten as a local non-profit organization is formed by a group of like-minded art practitioners (experienced artists, curators, critics, researchers, educators, art spaces organizers, etc). Our primary aim is to introduce a lively conception of contemporary art engaging with community, and the society at large, opening up a new exciting artistic territory for exploration and experimentation. The group has just been selected by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and entrusted to run the Shanghai Street Artspace (404, Shanghai Street, Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon) for a year.
